July 19 - Ottawa- 45 ACORN members delivered mattresses to Ottawa-Vanier MPP Madeleine Meilleur, demanding that every bed in a crack house be replaced by beds in Long Term Addictions Treatment Facilities. ACORN members challenged MPP Meilleur on the failure of her government to adequately fund drug rehabilitation and questioned the logic of the mayor and the new police chief regarding canceling the city's crack pipe program, but agree with them that the province is responsible for funding of drug treatment programs in Ontario. “ACORN is fed up with the Province ignoring this health crisis,” says Evan Soikie, Vanier ACORN chairperson. Soikie has had meetings with Meilleur about this issue telling her in person that the current Liberal Government is directly responsible for this crisis. Soikie goes on to say, “The current Government made 233 promises in the last election. They hardly kept any and directly broke more than a hundred of them.”
