ACORN Centers Volunteer Opportunities

ACORN Centers was created as a groundbreaking campaign to build wealth in low-income communities.  Every year, American families miss out on billions of dollars in tax credits and benefits they deserve.  Many low-income families may be eligible for a number of programs designed to enhance the income, health and nutrition of working and lower-income individuals and families.  These include annual tax refunds and year-round support in paying for necessities like food, child care, health care and utility bills.  These programs can help reduce your debt, improve your family’s health and nutrition, build and sustain your savings and help you achieve long-term economic stability.

ACORN Centers provide free tax preparation, benefits application assistance, foreclosure prevention, financial literacy training, and more.  And we need your help to keep providing these free services to the community.

Working Harder. Earning Less. Going Without.

As much as 25 percent of households eligible for the earned-income tax credit do not claim it, and miss out on as much as $12 billion a year. Almost half of all low-income households report going without medical care due to increased energy costs.

Nationally, about four in 10 people who qualify for Food Stamps do not claim them. Sixteen of the country’s most populous counties – from Nassau County, N.Y. to Orange County, Calif. – lag far behind the national participation rate, with as few as one in five eligible families receiving Food Stamps. If all eligible families with children participated fully in key programs, 3.8 million people could escape poverty.
