ACORN fights to reform utility practices

ACORN has won reforms of utilities service practices nationwide, helping low-income customers pay their bills and avoid service disruptions.
In 2007:
In Delaware, ACORN pushed off-shore wind farm Blue Water to agree to set the price of wind power, distributed through Delmarva Power, at an affordable rate of $6.76-$8.92 for 25 years. ACORN has been concerned that expensive wind power could add $11.71-$55 per month to energy bills.
ACORN has made significant strides in Louisiana in public transportation, energy prices and communications services.
After a brief battle with the Jefferson Parish Transit Authority, Harvey and Marrero ACORN members became the principal group working with the authority to make sure all communities have access to public transportation.
New Orleans ACORN launched a citywide utility campaign. ACORN members won a Fuel Adjustment charge decreased and a commitment from Entergy to restructure outrageous utility bills for returning residents.
Lower 9 ACORN fought AT&T & Utilities Commission that refused to provide phone service to their area & won phone services for the entire community.
In 2006:
ACORN successfully waged campaigns across the country, winning "no shut-off" agreements from utility companies in Texas and Florida.
Campaigns in Texas and Florida won no shut-off agreements from utility companies. In Florida, ACORN members convinced a state commission to reduce proposed utilities surcharges by $500 million. ACORN also waged successful campaigns for service reforms in Michigan, Houston, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Louisville, Ky.
ACORN works to impose moratoriums on shut-offs, so that families are not left without heat in winter or refrigeration in summer. We are negotiating programs to create lower rates and delay payments for low-income families.
ACORN has also waged successful campaigns for service reforms in Louisiana, Delaware, Michigan, and Kentucky.
ACORN opposes deregulation efforts and works to lessen the impact on consumers when deregulation occurs.
