How will donations to the ACORN Hurricane Recovery Fund be used?
ACORN is not a relief organization--we are a national community organization with headquarters in New Orleans and a deep membership in low and moderate income communities there.
Donations to the ACORN Recovery and Rebuilding Fund help us maintain temporary Headquarters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Houston, Texas, and to reopen our New Orleans offices as soon as possible. As we reopen and rebuild, we are uniting community members to face the challenges at hand:
- Locating and assisting displaced members;
- Servicing the housing and credit needs of our communities;
- Organizing to see that low income neighborhoods and families get the help the need and a voice in decisions about rebuilding.
Since the storm hit, ACORN members have united to support each other.
- ACORN sent out hundreds of text messages to New Orleans ACORN members in the wake of the storm, telling them that ACORN could help them with their immediate housing, food, and clothing needs.
- ACORN survivors organized in shelters and in Town Hall Meetings throughout September and October to ensure their right of return and a voice in the rebuilding process.
- Community organizing and public actions have led to:
- A food assistance program, and improvements in FEMA services in Houston;
- Increased housing assistance in Dallas;
- A march through The 9th Ward by residents declaring their right of return; and
- The formation of the ACORN Katrina Survivors Association, the first nationwide organization of displaced New Orleans residents.
- ACORN has joined a coalition of Louisiana-based labor, community, and civil rights organizations, to fight for priority job placement and training, living wage jobs, and access to immediate housing.
- ACORN will sponsor the ACORN Community Forum on Rebuilding New Orleans to be held in Baton Rouge in November.
Your donation will help us serve our communities in this time of dire need.
